"Although it has been debated over many years, on Feburary 24, 2004, frontman Robert Smith and keyboardist Roger O'Donnell admitted that they had a secret relationship between the years 1984 to 1989. "It all started after we performed at Club Lancaster in the summer of '84," Smith reminist, "we just looked at eachother and knew." Despite being in a deep gay love after there contact the two knew that if they were to ever become famous they would need to keep it secret.]] [[Even though they were not public yet there romance can clearly be seen as there platinum CD "The Top" hit the shelfs. Songs like "Piggy in the Mirror" and "Dressing Up" depict the fanatical devotion and gay love the couple shared for one another. However, trouble waters brewed beneath them, for in the spring of '87 Roberts drug abuse combined with Rogers gayness thrust the couple out of secrecies gay cabinet and into mainstream news. ]] [[After Robert Smith and Roger O'Donell's love was brought to the publics keen hawk-eye, fans were outraged and started to commit ritual suicide, until Robert would be cured of the gayness. By '89 the death toll was at a startling thirty thousand five hundred, with an error of thirty five thousand four hundred and ninty nine. Robert was startled at the news of his fan(s) death; him and Roger both agreed that love is a powerful thing and they both simultaniously agreed to break it off forever. Although Smith would go on to marry a woman he would never forget about his true love Roger, which is evident in the song "Disintegration." |
